| Thimble Theatre (Popeye) by Elzie Segar (1450-) 1st Appearance December 19th 1919, 1st Sunday January 25th 1925, 1st Popeye Daily January 17th 1929, 1st Popeye Sunday March 2nd 1930 - Elzie Crisler Segar was already a very successful cartoonist from his earlier work on "Married Life" and "Charley Chaplin's comic capers" when he began working on Thimble Theatre. The original stars of the strip was the Oyl family, especially Olive and her brother Castor. Together with Olive's boyfriend "Ham" Gravy, they set off on a number of slapstick adventures which had plenty of gag strips sprinkled in. The landscape of comics changed forever when 10 years into the strip a surly ill-mannered sailor came into the picture, his name was Popeye. In a matter of a couple of years, Popeye was now the center of all of the action in the strip. His adventures on the sea, in boxing, and later settling into suburban life would be some of the most humorous of any to see print. Elzie Segar built a great cast of peripheral characters which included Eugene the Jeep. The Sea-Hag, Alice the Goon, J. Wellington Wimpy and many more. Popeye's strength reliance to Spinach became a marketing dream as the premise was extended to the incredible Max Fleischer cartoons of the early 1930's. Popeye turned into a true cartoon icon which has transcended multiple generations. The market for Thimble Theatre is quite good. The strip had very wide carraige so lucky collectors wil find stout supply which keeps prices reasonable. Collectors tend to navigate to full-color Fulls and Tabs. Premium strips include the early 1925 sundays, the early 1930 appearances of Popeye, the first appearance of the Jeep, and the great Plunder Island episodes with the Sea-Hag, Alice the Goon, and Bill Barnacle. |
