Superman by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster  (1370-) 1st Daily January 16, 1939,  1st Sunday November 5, 1939 - For the Comic Book medium, Superman is the ultimate cultural icon that it has ever produced.   The newspaper version was created as a support vehicle, but in fact was the content of many of the early comic book collections.   Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster the Superman newspaper version stuck to the formula of the comic books,  continuity stories with plenty of cliffhangers sprinkled in between.  Siegel and Shuster teamed on the newspaper strips (both daily and Sunday) through mid-1942.  Their epic artwork and exciting pulp-ish stories were the epitome of Golden Age Comics.  Excellent cartoonists would follow, but the steel-jawed Superman of Siegel & Shuster is by far the most special of all versions.  The strip was offered exclusively as halves and tabs or smaller.  The market for these is strong.   The most asked-for strips are the origin strips which were produced every few years and show the baby Superman blasting off from the exploding planet Krypton.   Other premium strips include the first appearance of Lex Luthor, Superman's arch-enemy, and the the famous Giant Robot episode which was prominently re-created in the greatest of Max Fleischer's film cartoons.  Luckily for the collector, recognition of quality came early and many of these were hoarded.    The ample supply has the effect of depressing prices significantly.    Where the first Superman appearance in Comic Books can breach a quarter-million dollars or more, the first sunday paper appearance can be had for under a thousand.   Dailies are actually a little rarer and sell faster that the sundays.
