| Polly (and her Pals) by Cliff Sterrett (1150-) 1st Daily December 4, 1912, 1st Sunday December 28, 1913 - Polly and her pals was more the story of Paw (Sammy Perkins) than about Polly herself. Paw Perkins was a small spectacled, mustachioed man whose sensabilities were forever being stretched by the women in his life. Those women were his wife who was always known as Maw and Polly, his perpetually suitored niece. Together with Polly's main suitor Bert, they starred in the strip for close to 50 years. The strip rarely waivered from the formula where Polly's lovelife was causing a minor crisis for Paw. Paw's inconveniences were almost always set in the domestic setting. Cliff Sterrett was the creator and writer of Pa's problems. In addition to writing the strip he would draw the Polly dailies through the mid 30's and would draw the sundays for the entire run of the strip. It was his classic artwork which catches most enthusiasts eye. Sterrett had a great knack for drawing humorous facial expressions in an understated fashion. This makes for high comedy in some on his better pages. Sterrett was also one of the earliest cartoonist to play with proportional distortions. This gave his characters and scenes a distinctive tone that lent itself to the camp humor of the day. The market for Polly is good. Sundays sell quite well at a modest premium. Collectors tend to look for Full-color sunday fulls and tabs when available. Dailies sell even better than sundays. |
