Gasoline Alley by Frank King (0560-) 1st Appearance November 24, 1918 - The goings-on in Gasoline Alley Texas was voted as the top comic-strip of all time.  The strip began in 1918 under the guidance of one of the finest cartoonists ever, Frank King.  King would start with 'Uncle Walt', a rotund but good-natured local of the small-town.   The strip meandered in obscurity for a couple of years, until on February 14, 1921 King added the new dimension of Skeezix, an abandoned baby which Walt adopted.  From there, King would begin to weave a tapestry of growing up in small-town america.   King's finest moments were the interaction of Walt and Skeezix and then later Corky (his son from his marriage to Phyllis Blossom).  The pages where the kindly Walt is walking through the seasons with his sons are spectacular.  Walt would bring up his boys in a world full of warmth and color, while the boys would get into their mischief.  King was the master of mood in his presentations, and the mood was usually bright.  His work on extending page layouts beyond the traditional panels and to extend the artwork past the panel boundary is a study in cartooning.  The strip is still alive today and has a popular following.   The market for Gasoline Alley is very strong.  Luckily for the collector, the popularity of the strip placed it in an extraordinarily high number of newspapers which makes the supply ample and keeps prices reasonable.  Fulls for Gasoline Alley are readily available into the late 1930's, collectors go for those at a steady pace.  The very earliest strips through the first year of Skeezix are premium.  Other premium pages include King's panel experimentation strips, his color mosaic strips and his trademark yearly calendar strips.
