Flash Gordon by Alex Raymond (0530-) 1st Appearance January 7, 1934 - In the midst of the Great Depression, as a response to the popularity of Buck Rogers for another syndicate, Alex Raymond was tasked to create Flash Gordon. Raymond, who had been ghosting on a number of other strips including Blondie & Tim Tyler's Luck, took immediate ownership. He started with a classic end-of-the-world first storyline, which gained the strip instant popularity. This gave Raymond freedom of expression within the strip which he took full advantage of. Beginning late 1934, the artwork on the strip took a previously unseen turn. The scenes, always colorful, got larger with more fluid artwork. Characters unstiffened and interacted with vivid passion panel-to-panel. It was no longer just a comic-strip, it was a work of art coming each week in the newspaper; and the public loved it. Flash Gordon grew to cult status and beyond with entry into other media, the most popular of which was the movie serials (starring american swimming hero Buster Crabbe). The Alex Raymond era of Flash Gordon must be considered one of the top for any strip ever created. Raymond would leave Flash Gordon in mid-1944 to join the war effort. After his time, the strip would flow from/to many accomplished cartoonists including Austin Briggs, Mac Raboy and Dan Barry. Though never quite equaling the brilliance of the early Raymond strips, the quality of Flash Gordon has stayed at quite high levels. Of the long running adventure strips (Flash is still being published today), Flash Gordon is the ultimate sunday comics series collectable. The market for Flash Gordon is very good throughout all eras of the strip. The most desirable are the 1935-36 strips where Raymond's artistic genius was at it's zenith. The 1934 pages are unique for their important early storyline and later for the Paper Dolls which showed up for a few short months. Uncut, these Paper Doll pages demand a high premium. Fulls throughout the Raymond era are the most desired types of page - each should contain a Jungle Jim strip topper uncut. Smaller size tabs are sometimes available, some with the Jungle Jim Topper, some without. They sell well at about 2/3rd the price of the fulls. The later strips by Mac Raboy (an accomplished Fawcett comic-book artist) command a small premium for their exceptional artwork. By that time, Flash had shrunk to half-size or smaller in most newspapers. The Dailies are quite sought-after and sell quickly at a high premium. |
