| Bronc Peeler/On the Range by Fred Harman (0185-) 1st appearance 1934 - Bronc Peeler was Fred Harman's first effort in the Newspaper Comics. Bronc Peeler was the adventures of a ranch hand in the contemporary southwest. Along with his friend Coyote Pete, Bronc would wrestle with western evil-doers for the five-year span of the strip. The strip was moderately entertaining, however collectors are drawn to its companion strip "On the Range". This companion was normally a single frame portraying a scene within western life. It is through this vehicle that Fred Harman showed off his extraordinary artistic skill. No other cartoonist before or since had the knack for illustrating the action and melancholy of the American West Color Full-size pages featuring a half of Bronc Peeler on top and a half of On the Range below are highly sought after by collectors. As such, they command a very high premium and still sell quite well. Without or separated from 'On the Range', Bronc Peeler sundays sell a bit slower. Due to limited syndication, the dailies are quite uncommon and are very difficult to keep in stock. (60) |
